Em The Producers (Mel Brooks, 1968), o produtor Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) e o seu contabilista Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) procuram levar aos palcos a pior peça de teatro de sempre, de modo a obterem o maior lucro possível nas bilheteiras (graças a um esquema fraudulento). O musical Springtime for Hitler, com financiamento de idosas seduzidas por Max, é a escolha como potencial flop.

Em Bullets Over Broadway (Woody Allen, 1994), em plenos anos 20, David Shane (John Cusack) recorre ao financiamento do gangster Nick Valenti (Joe Viterelli) para levar aos palcos uma peça de teatro; em troca, a sua namorada Olive Neal (Jennifer Tilly) tem de ficar com um papel, contracenando com Helen Sinclair (Dianne Wiest) - mesmo com fraco talento para a representação.

Duas comédias distintas, com os palcos como pano de fundo.

Blindness (Fernando Meirelles, 2008) e Los Ojos de Julia (Guillem Morales, 2010) têm como elemento central e denominador comum a perda da visão. Mais do que um dos cinco sentidos, é através dos olhos que a nossa percepção do mundo é obtida de uma forma mais eficaz e facilmente percebemos o quão devastador será o impacto desta incapacidade.

A partir de "Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira" (José Saramago), Blindness retrata um surto epidémico que leva à perda da visão. A solução encontrada pelas autoridades para conter este surto passa pela quarentena, num hospital psiquiátrico abandonado - local onde os doentes rapidamente criam um novo conjunto de regras, associado à nova realidade. E é a um retrato desta sociedade paralela que assistimos, enquanto o caos conduz a vários (e distintos) conflitos.

Enfrentando uma doença degenerativa que a irá conduzir à perda da visão, Julia (Belén Rueda) descobre a sua irmã gémea enforcada, num cenário de aparente suicídio. Não convencida por esta hipótese e perante uma série de pistas que apontam para o homicídio, Julia parte para a investigação do que realmente aconteceu, enquanto se debate com a mesma ausência de visão - ainda que temporária, após uma cirúrgia que poderá combater a doença.

Dois exercícios distintos, num registo thriller tenso.

synopsis

The handsome and wealthy César (Eduardo Noriega) is very successful with women and is having difficulties getting rid of Nuria (Najwa Nimri), his last affair. His best friend, Pelayo (Fele Martínez), is unlucky with women and jealous of César. At his birthday party, César meets the gorgeous and sexy Sofia (Penélope Cruz), currently dating Pelayo, but they are immediately attracted to each other and spend the night together in her apartment.

The next morning, César finds Nuria outside of Sofia's building, and he accepts her offer of a ride home. However, she commits suicide, crashing her car against a wall, but César survives the crash with his face completely disfigured. The doctors do not have the technology to restore his face and César is absolutely depressed and missing Sofia. One night, César meets Sofia and Pelayo in a bar but he drinks too much and passes out on the street. However, the next morning, Sofia finds César on the street and kisses him...

Arbitrage é um thriller competente que conta ainda com Susan Sarandon e Brit Marling (Another Earth, 2011) no elenco. Chega às salas de cinema portuguesas a 11 de Outubro.
